Malpas continued their push for promotion with a hard earned 33-17 win away to West Mon
After Tuesday’s semi-final win against Caldicot Malpas went into the fixture full of confidence but this was put to the test from the whistle with West Mon sending their big runners at the Malpas side and scored a try within the first five minutes this was quickly followed up by a second try and the visitors found themselves 14-0 down.
Malpas regrouped and after a period of pressure they were awarded a couple of penalties that were slotted over by Lewis Bowden, Malpas were now in the driving seat and started putting pressure on the West Mon scrum and after a sustained attack centre Kieran Williams broke through and popped a pass to winger Danny Allen who went over for the visiting sides first try.
Malpas turned around at half time 14-13 behind but with the wind in their sails and a half time rollicking they started the 2nd half the stronger and after a couple of strong drives by the Malpas back row the ball was spun wide for replacement winger Andrew Desmond to sneak over in the corner.
The game to and frowed with both sides cancelling each other out for long periods of the 2nd half
Until full back Ryan Bradford picked up a loose kick on the half way line and rather than run the ball back decided it was time for the season’s first drop goal which sailed between the posts
The game was then stopped as prop Rhys Sayer found the going a little tough and decided he needed a quick nap, replacement Mark Cox came on for the last 5 minutes and showed his years of experience when calling for the ball from a ruck on the West Mon try line threw a beautiful miss pass to Lewis Bowden who went over untouched.
Final Score West Mon 17 Malpas 33
Promotion is still a real possibility in the Malpas Rugby Clubs Ten-year anniversary season.
